Berthold Wolpe drew the blackletter Sachsenwald design in the early 1930s. Originally named Bismarck Schrift, it is one of the finest typographic examples of traditional lettre de forme blackletter, a scribal letter form developed well before the time of Gutenberg. Monotype produced fonts of type from Wolpes drawings in 1936. Renamed Sachsenwald and issued on the eve of World War II, this remarkable blackletter type was seldom used. Wolpe Sachsenwald is a digital remastering of the original metal Monotype fonts. The light and regular weights capture the distinctive calligraphic character of the original 1930s design. Wolpe Sachsenwald is one of the five suites of designs in the Berthold Wolpe Collection of typefaces.Wolpe was born in Germany, and was a student of Rudolf Koch. He began his career at the Klingspor foundry in Offenbach but moved to England in 1932. While Wolpe designed several typefaces, his main body of work was the many book jackets he designed for Faber & Faber publishers. Wolpe died in 1989 at the age of 84.
